...through a glass, dimly (2025)
for piano quartet
Program Notes
…through a glass, dimly (2025) captures the disorienting and fragmented experience of vertigo—the overwhelming sensation of perceiving the world in a distorted, unclear way. The title evokes the feeling of seeing through a hazy or blurred lens, echoing the way vertigo alters one’s sense of space, balance, and reality. In such moments, the familiar world around us can seem unrecognizable, tilting and spinning with an almost surreal intensity, as the mind struggles to regain a sense of control. The music unfolds in fluctuating cycles, much like the recurring waves of dizziness and disorientation that define vertigo. At times, the quartet achieves moments of fragile clarity, where the instruments’ voices come together in a brief resolution but then suddenly plunge into moments of dissonance and harsh tones, blurring clarity. This piece was commissioned for and premiered by the Unheard-of//Ensemble.
